Typically Flares are red.  These would be used primarily for distress purposes.  Multi-Flares are typically sold in boxes of six and compromise of two red, two green and two white flares.  The different colours could be used to communicate pre-arranged signs from various locations in the wilderness between two or more parties.

Q.
What does a Bear Banger do?

A.
It is well documented that any noise made in the vicinity of bears is not a bad thing to do.  Bears are thereby aware of human presence.  A Bear Banger is a pyrotechnic device fired from a pen launcher into the atmosphere.  At about 100 feet, the projectile explodes with a loud report.  This loud noise can be heard by bears from many kilometers away.

Q.
What is the difference between Rim Fire and Centre Fire?

A.
If you look down the top of the pen launcher's tube, you will notice a small pin on the top of the firing pin.  If the little pin is in the middle, this is a Centre Fire product, if the pin is to one side; it is a Rim Fire product.  It is imperative to use Rim Fire Bear Bangers and Flares with a Rim Fire pen launcher and a Centre Fire pen launchers should only be used with Centre Fire Bear Bangers and Flares.

Q.
How do you change a pen launcher from Rim Fire to Centre Fire or vice versa?

A.
With the firing pin in the top position, unscrew the bottom of the pen launcher.  Remove the spring and unscrew the screw that is connected to the firing pin.  The remaining parts of the firing pin should slide out of the bottom of the pen launcher tube.  You will notice that the pin on the top of the firing pin itself is either in the middle or to one side.  When the pin is in the middle, this is a Centre Fire unit and when it is to one side, this is a Rim Fire unit.  Once you determine which position you would like to obtain, place that units into the tube of the pen launcher, followed by the other unit and followed by the spring.  Screw the small screw into the top firing pin, through the side of the pen launcher's tube and replace the bottom cap of the pen launcher.

Q.
If a pen launcher does not pull back smoothly, how do I grease it?

A.
Pull the firing pin down into the firing position, and apply a little amount of gun oil, or similar product.  By moving the firing pin up and down in a rapid motion will accelerate the process.
